A 3-Letter Word That Can Change Everything

January 20, 20252 min read

Words matter. When someone says or messages something to you, it has incredible power.

Those words can cut you to the bone,

OR

those words can lift your spirits and result in an instantaneous, toothy smile.

Words you say to yourself matter even more.

Today, I’m going to share with you a tiny little word that will change how you perceive situations and ultimately make your self-talk move in a more helpful direction.

We could all use a nudge sometimes to steer our negative thoughts into a more kind and compassionate direction.

Here is your official reintroduction to the beautifully brief and powerful little word: YET.

Why does YET hold power?

"yet"

Here’s a quick story: I was convinced that I could not make Instagram reels. You know, the ones where I’m expecting myself to stare at a screen and talk like I’m talking to other human beings.

Here’s my negative self-talk: “I have no idea what I am doing. My nails aren’t painted. I want to sound professional instead of like an even more twangy Brittany Spears. My hair hasn’t been washed. No one gives a sh*t about what I’m sharing. Girls don’t want to see a 48 year old mom giving them life advice.”

Pretty harsh, huh?

I can literally will myself to believe that I cannot do something for a host of reasons (all of which are horribly negative and, frankly, mean to myself).

YET, when I use the little ole word “yet,” I grant myself a bit of compassion and space.

YET is a placeholder for possibility.

If I reframe one of my nasty little comments above from, “I have no idea what I’m doing” to “I have no idea what I’m doing…yet,” I grant myself the gift of possibility! I’m not saying I can never do this–I just can’t do it yet. I will figure it out!

Try this on. Use the word “yet” when you are spiraling into negative self-talk. It’s normal to question yourself and to have these thoughts, by the way.

Nothing is wrong with you. You’re human and we just do this. Yet, now you have an easy tool to help (good one, huh?).

You’re stronger than you think you are, and I’ve always got your back.
