No Wind Resistance: Your Personal Invitation

An Invitation to Living With Freedom

What does it mean to grant yourself complete permission to live without resistance? I’m talking about unabashed, unchained permission to be free. Feeling whatever TF you want to feel. Doing what you know is best for you. Deciding when you want to decide. Responding to life and others with authenticity and no veiled paranoia of the image you’re projecting. Living with unapologetic self-compassion. Standing in your truth. Granting yourself the permission to live freely, without the tight grip of what others think you should be doing.

Why do we allow ourselves to be chained by society’s expectations and fake perfectionism? As women, we especially hold ourselves to unreasonable, unrealistic, and soul-shattering expectations. Kinneret’s song “No Wind Resistance” is such a spot on portrayal of how we can seek freedom from expectations (stemming from ourselves and others).

Running With No Wind Resistance

Part of Kinneret’s chorus tells us, “I'll bet ya I can run faster with no wind resistance.” I invite you to imagine yourself running while listening to these types of thoughts in your head: “She runs funny.” “Why is she even running?” “I can run faster than her.” “Her thighs are fat.” “Where did she even get those knockoff shorts?” Do these negative and cruel thoughts sound familiar?

Now, imagine running without the resistance of other’s expectations, society’s expectations, social media’s expectations, your parents’ (although usually well-meaning but not well-communicated) expectations? Might it feel exhilarating, freeing, and empowering?

AND scary? It is scary to dive into a new way of thinking: change is moving away from what you’re conditioned to do, what you’re used to doing. Our brains love to keep things the same, even if it’s not necessarily good for us. So, when you choose to release the bonds of other’s expectations and follow your own dreams, you will feel exceptional resistance. This resistance is sneaky and will ask you questions like, “why am I taking this chance?" "What if I fail?” and, my personal favorite, “who does she think she is?” So, imagining yourself running free without carrying the burden of other’s opinions is wildly exhilarating at first…until your resistance-brain kicks in. It feels like letting air out of a balloon. The good news is, you can learn to recognize it for what it is, name it, and move on. You can’t change what you don’t see. And, guess what? Now you see what resistance really is! It’s YOUR brain telling you these things. So, noticing and calling out resistance is the first step in stabbing that beast with a golden sword.

“I’ll Fly Under No Conditions"-- What does this even mean?

Choosing to fly without conditions…what does that even mean? We are always thinking of conditions when we’re considering living authentically or forging our own paths: this is what I call the “what ifs.” Examples of the “what ifs” are: What if I fail? What if he doesn’t really like me? What if I say something stupid? What am I even doing?. “What ifs” are truly debilitating and stop our forward trajectory. Considering moving ahead with NO conditions is truly empowering because that means they don't matter. You’re just choosing to do the thing, and you aren’t weighing yourself down with the “what ifs.” I always bring in my homeboy Hagrid during an attack of the “what ifs”. He says, “What’s comin’ will come, and we’ll meet it when it does.” Ah, Hagrid, that’s brilliant. We have no control over what’s coming, so “what if-ing” ourselves to death is wasting precious energy. We are smart, accountable, and kind: we’ll figure it out!

What If You Grant Yourself Permission?

Living with no wind resistance is the ultimate dive into authenticity. Allowing yourself to embrace your real desires, your personal dreams (not the dreams others have for you), and your shame free, judgement free self is truly inspiring.

No Resistance sign

I give you the freedom to grant yourself permission to live with no wind resistance: that’s living without fear, without shame, without self-doubt. Now that you know what resistance is (she’s an ugly little beast), you can see her for what she is: your brain’s attempt to keep everything stable and normal. Greeting her with compassion (“Hey, Resistance. I see you.”) but keeping her in her place (“I see you trying to make me doubt myself. Not going there today. I am imperfect and I matter and I’m moving forward.”) will give you the confidence you need to live freely and authentically.

Resistance has no power when we recognize it. Say, "well, hello there!" And move right along.

Read the lyrics below and think about how you can get curious about what you're currently resisting.

"No Wind Resistance" Lyrics:

I don't know how it ends, I can't see it in the distance

But can you ever reach the end of a timeless existence?

I'll bet ya I can run faster with no wind resistance

I'll fly under no conditions

Teach myself complete submission

While I grant myself complete permission

Just imagine being human

Hating your confusion

Denying 'til it's proven

Laughing at illusion

Thinking institution's the solution

While tyranny and irony float in its pollution

Imagine reducing yourself to your name

Janet, you've got no one else you can blame

You've suck all your consciousness inside of your brain

So now you just shoot stuff inside of your veins

So go ahead and find your meaning

With your methamphetamine

And once you can see that you've trapped all your grace

Maybe you'll join me and girl we can race

I'll bet ya I can run faster with no wind resistance

I'll fly under no conditions

Teach myself complete submission

While I grant myself complete permission

No streets, receipts

Off-beat heartbeats

Just window seats

For free, for free

I've been here sixty years and I'm still not bored

There's absolutely nothing that I can't afford

And I've found that almost everything is made of cardboard

And there's absolutely nothing I can't sing with weird chords and

I can run faster with no wind resistance

I'll fly under no conditions

Teach myself complete submission

While I grant myself complete permission
